Vancouver, Hockey Central

Every country has it’s own popular sport that every kid plays day in and day out. In Ireland this sport is football. Kids will meet up together in their neighbourhood and set up match’s on the street’s and will play for hours on end till the streets lights come on. In Canada it’s a little bit different. Even tho football is big in Canada, everyone knows in Vancouver when it comes to sport that hockey is number one.

Just like at home kids will come together on the streets of their neighbourhood and play hockey from noon till night. Its amazing to see how talented kid can be by just playing with their friends. I can see by looking at the kids at sunset, even at a young age, how skilled they are at the sport from just picking up a hockey stick and hitting a tennis ball off the wall as what I done back at home with a football when I was their age.

It’s nice to see a different range of sports being played, and not seeing football dominating everything like back at home. The kids here in Vancouver are so skilled at this sport that I find it very difficult playing at their level.

The teachers at Moberly are relly nice people to work with. They are very welcoming and they never let you feel left out.

Leon Williams is a P.E specialist here at Moberly elementary. Leon is a fantastic person to learn from due to his unique way in teaching kids. Leon used to work in a classroom here at Moberly teaching maths and geography, but packed it all in many years back to become a P.E teacher, and he said it was the best thing he ever did.

Paul and I have set up a wrestling class here at Sunset on Wednesday afternoons from 5:00pm to 6:00 pm. The youths here are very interested in the class. In the class I teach them takedowns, submissions, escapes, and sweeps. The key factor of the class is self defense.

What I have learned teaching kids at Moberly

The kids at Moberly are very mature for their age and they are the nicest group of kids I have ever worked with. What surprised me about Moberly was that every class in the school has at least one child with special needs or has a disability. I thought it is a great setup to have because it now cancels out a divided line and brings everyone together as one. And it also makes kids feel more relaxed and educates kids about disabilitys and special needs. As I took each class for P.E I started to see that the kids work relly well together as a group in games and activitys. You can see as they play that no kid is left out, nobody gets annoyed, and that you sometimes forget that the competition is even there that its all just fun.

I have learned alot in my time here, good teaching skills and information that help me alot teaching class back in Ireland. One thing I can say about Canada is that the people here are so nice and they welcome you here with open arms. My time here is almost finished and as I look back on the weeks I have here this is one place that I will sadly miss.

Paul got me a place at Moberly Elementary School as an assistant for the P.E teacher. This month at Moberly it’s soccer in the gym so my job is to take them for a warm up and stretch, create teams, and keep score and set timer. The kids at Moberly are relly good at sports and they work well as a team.
